Rap: Chance the rapper
Chance tha Rapper
First of all let me say this, I’m all about seeing people from Chicago shine and reach success because Lord knows the ghetto needs the inspiration. So, I just happen to have my television on the other night during the Arsenio Hall show when Chance the rapper talked with Arsenio and then performed. Honestly, I was subscribed to his email list sometime ago but I never really checked out his music. I liked his logo, his artwork and presentation was original so I subbed. Needless to say, when he started to perform at first I was in it but then the lyrics hit me. I was like, What did he say ? Did he say Chainsmoker ? Suddenly, I was dumbfounded and confused by his performance, and I just didn’t know anything about rap anymore. I didn’t know if that was really rap, I didn’t know if he was really a rapper, I wasn’t sure if he was from the southside of Chicago and I wondered if maybe he was a distant cousin of Kanye West. You know with that you can’t really understand this cause it’s so intellectually strange and over the top-ish. All I know is that his performance left me knowing very little, and I don’t like that feeling. Everything I thought I knew about rappers from Chicago and rap music had been violated and well, that’s just not nice. It’s not nice at all. If Kanye isn’t thinking about signing him then it may be because he’s never thought that anyone can top him with being “different”. At least I can say I have a fundamental understanding of the different that Kanye is and does. This right here is something “entirely different”.
I know he wasn’t high, but it seemed that at some point he disconnected from the present moment and went into another place that only he could see and feel. I guess if you’re going to call yourself a performer then that isn’t a bad thing however for those of us watching well, its just NOT NICE. A performance should include the audience instead of turning all of us into unsuspecting spectators peering through our fingers afraid to look and afraid not to. Kanye knows how to do that too ! I had to google him to find out more about what I’ve missed and how did he manage to get by making rap music with a trumpet playing in the background ? I had a feeling that somewhere in his past and future was some LIL Wayne and yep that subtle hint of lil wayne strange is present. What is it with these rappers today ? It seems that everyone who’s making it has to have an element of strange. It’s like we don’t even appreciate the Tupac, Snoop Dog, Ice Cube, DMX style rappers anymore. Don’t get me wrong, I like Jazz and I like rap but I don’t get mustard with my peanut butter either. Somethings just should not be put together and of course it would be a peculiar kid from Chicago. I ain’t mad, but this is going to take some adjustments to get use to.
Go head Chance show the world that the influences of the Chicago ghetto can produce all kinds of “different”.
