Rap: Qaw’mane Young QC Wilson

Rap: Qaw’mane Young QC Wilson

He was Nick Story on the television show The Reawakening, Young QC on Youtube, his mother Yolanda Holmes named him Qaw’mane but his family called him Q. He is the only child of Yolanda Holmes and a popular entertainer here in Chicago. He graduated from Manley Highschool on the west side of Chicago with the name Qaw’mane Holmes in 2008. He was known for acting, dancing, rapping and living the life. It appeared that everything was going right for him and his career. He had fans, friends and popularity. The television show the Reawakening which is popular among pre-teens and teens here in Chicago had plans to release a movie soon featuring Qaw’mane. The youtube video promoting the movie release has been taken down.

While the internet is all buzzing about how wonderful Yolanda Holmes was and how much she loved her son and her community very little has been said about his father.

Supposedly, his father is incarcerated in Statesville penitentiary although his father is also supposed to be Ghainian. I think it’s highly unlikely that a Ghanian came to America and got incarcerated. Usually they flee the country before getting sent to prison. It is said that his name originated in Ghana which may be why some believe his father is Ghanian. Either way, I’m certainly curious about the relationship he had or did not have with his father.

If you are annoyed by these posting about him and you have joined in the masses who have all but stoned this young man to death please remember he’s innocent until proven guilty. We all know how corrupt our political and judicial systems are here in America. We know that these systems are only as good as the people who create and manage them.

I think it’s best to ask the right people the right questions and not assume that all of what the media has portrayed is accurate. What we know about this young man is that he aspired to be more than he was. He had dreams, he had hopes, and he did pursue them. He was also “privileged” his mother drove a Lexus truck and a BMW while he drove a Mustang. His love for money and material things was instilled in him by his up bringing and environment. The desire to be in the limelight, the desire to be rich and famous is something that many of us can relate to. Which leads me to the question where did he go wrong ? What could possibly push him over the edge to commit such a heinous crime against his mother, himself and his community. This crime isn’ t  just about money and material things. That’s too easy, too simple, and people are just not that simple. Something more has happened here, and it didn’t happen over night.

Yolanda Holmes plea for help with her son
Yolanda Holmes plea for help with her son

Yolanda Holmes did mention her son Qaw’mane whom she referred to as her “offspring” was out of control. What she did about this is unknown at this point but I do consider this a plea for help.  A plea that should have been answered by loving family, friends, and even the community if needed.

It takes a village. Did you respond to the plea for help ?

This post was made on October 9, 2011 one year before she was murdered. Something was troubling this relationship between mother and son. I’m sure that if she posted on her facebook page then she also talked about it to friends, family and loved ones. Women usually talk a lot about their children.

Then there is the boyfriend of Yolanda Holmes who was pistol whipped during the attack. How did the attacker get into the apartment and who is this “boyfriend” ? If Yolanda Holmes was attacked by an intruder than how is it that her boyfriend was only pistol whipped, but she a petite woman of only five feet tall was shot and stabbed ? Why wasn’t her boyfriend injured as he tried to protect her ? According to the article the boyfriend was in the bedroom asleep and was awakened by the sound of a gun going off. He was no awakened by the front door opening, or the sound of a struggle or the sound of her screaming for help. No, he was awakened after all of that had already taken place and by then there was little he could do to save her. Well, I don’t buy it. Who is this boyfriend and where is he ? What is his connection to the judge and C.P.D ?

This is a case to be taken seriously because this young man and his mother are both influential members of our community, and there are many people who are affected by the outcome of all of this. There are still young impressionable fans who stand behind and support Qaw’ mane and lets not forget he has children. One paternity case filed on April 5, 2013 by Kierra Johnson is still pending.

What’s evident in the video below is that Qaw’ mane was swept up in the entertainment life. He wanted to be big time, so he imitated those before him who are idolized by our youth. He took pictures with expensive cars, he threw around some money, and he partied.  That alone certainly does not make him guilty nor does calling his mother.

However, there are other accusations that he allowed the hired hitman to drive his cars. Is this true and if so where is the proof ?

Did the accused allow his mothers killer to driver her cars ?
Did the accused allow his mothers killer to driver her cars ?

In this video below Qua’mane “Young QC” Wilson mentions that his mother was murdered in an effort to show that he can relate to the murder of Haidiya Pendelton. However, this few seconds in which he speaks of his mother without emotion and refers to her as a “neighborhood woman” speaks volumes about his guilt. His rapid eye blinks are more consistent with nervousness than grief and pain. Losing a parent and being overcome with the loss and grief doesn’t usually warrant nervousness, and since he was quite comfortable in front of the camera this behavior isn’t normal. The camera was his friend, an ally and perhaps even his addiction. Feeding a need for attention and the limelight.

Meanwhile, one of his baby mama’s has expressed that there is more to this situation. There are allegations that Qaw’mane was molested as a child although it hasn’t been made clear who molested him. One thing that’s clear is that there was some tension in the relationship between Qaw’mane and his mother evident from her facebook posting referring to him as her “offspring” and then there is his impersonal tattoo dedicated to her. His tattoo says Yolanda Holmes. What happened to “Mama” ? Tattoos are usual much more personal this almost seems as though the tattoo is dedicated to someone he barely had a relationship with.

Quawmane dedication tattoo
Qaw’mane Wilson dedication tattoo to his mother Yolanda Holmes

While the tattoo Yolanda Holmes dedicated to her son Qaw’ mane Wilson seems a little bit too personal. Is this normal ? I’ve never seen this before. Do mothers normally tattoo their sons name on their hip/abdomen area ? This picture, these rumors and all of this has only left more questions to be answered. Something was causing strain in this relationship and someone knows exactly what was going on. Now is the time to speak.

If this tattoo were placed somewhere else like on her leg or her arm then It would have different implications.

What do you think ? Are these appropriate or normal tattoos for a mother and son ? Are there rules about what places are off limits for placing the names of family and platonic friends ?

With the entire City already convinced and not willing to explore other possibilities or look at other suspects what chance did he have ? His social media pages (twitterinstagram, facebook,) filled with would be evidence of greed and an appetite for a lavish lifestyle as a motive to kill.

It seems that Qaw’ mane has proved his own guilt. When I first saw the posting about this case I didn’t want to believe it, and that’s why I waited before posting anything. Now, after all the google searches, fan comments, family comments and the glimpse into his and his mothers life I think there is more to this story that needs to be told.

Qaw' mane Wilson
Qaw’mane Wilson flashy money for the camera

To simply say that he killed is mother for the money and that’s the end is the lazy way out. There is more to this then what’s put before us. What I know is that families cover for each other and protect each other which makes it even harder to find out what really happened and why. Accepting that he killed his mother may be the lesser of two evils. This may be a much easier pill for family, friends and loved ones to swallow but that doesn’t make it right. Whatever the truth is, it needs to be told. These two very influential people have touched the lives of many and I believe that once the wholes story is told they will touch the lives of many, many more.

Dwyane Wade: Is going to the Chapel

Gabby Unions Rock

I knew it was coming and it’s finally here. Wait, why am I so excited ? I just love it. Omg, pass me some tissue that rock is making my eyes water. Congratulations to the Flash man and the beautiful and talented Gabrielle Union.

Alas, Dwyane has given Chicago something else to be a happy about. Seriously, Gabby said yes. I think this is absolutely amazing, and now it’s time to pick a dress, a caterer, flowers, flower girls and breathe. Exhale. Weddings are soo much work, and I’m sure that Gabby is about to make the best of it while reminding Mr. Flash to um put the cap back on the toothpaste, please, LOL. Thank you.

According to CNN.com, Dwyane made the announcement last night December 21 to friends, family and followers by tweeting “She Said Yes” !

Rap: Chance the rapper

Rap: Chance the rapper

Chance tha Rapper

Chance tha Rapper

First of all let me say this, I’m all about seeing people from Chicago shine and reach success because Lord knows the ghetto needs the inspiration. So, I just happen to have my television on the other night during the Arsenio Hall show when Chance the rapper talked with Arsenio and then performed. Honestly, I was subscribed to his email list sometime ago but I never really checked out his music. I liked his logo, his artwork and presentation was original so I subbed. Needless to say, when he started to perform at first I was in it but then the lyrics hit me. I was like, What did he say ? Did he say Chainsmoker ? Suddenly, I was dumbfounded and confused by his performance, and I just didn’t know anything about rap anymore. I didn’t know if that was really rap, I didn’t know if he was really a rapper, I wasn’t sure if he was from the southside of Chicago and I wondered if maybe he was a distant cousin of Kanye West. You know with that you can’t really understand this cause it’s so intellectually strange and over the top-ish. All I know is that his performance left me knowing very little, and I don’t like that feeling. Everything I thought I knew about rappers from Chicago and rap music had been violated and well, that’s just not nice. It’s not nice at all. If Kanye isn’t thinking about signing him then it may be because he’s never thought that anyone can top him with being “different”. At least I can say I have a fundamental understanding of the different that Kanye is and does. This right here is something “entirely different”.

I know he wasn’t high, but it seemed that at some point he disconnected from the present moment and went into another place that only he could see and feel. I guess if you’re going to call yourself a performer then that isn’t a bad thing however for those of us watching well, its just NOT NICE. A performance should include the audience instead of turning all of us into unsuspecting spectators peering through our fingers afraid to look and afraid not to. Kanye knows how to do that too ! I had to google him to find out more about what I’ve missed and how did he manage to get by making rap music with a trumpet playing in the background ? I had a feeling that somewhere in his past and future was some LIL Wayne and yep that subtle hint of lil wayne strange is present. What is it with these rappers today ? It seems that everyone who’s making it has to have an element of strange. It’s like we don’t even appreciate the Tupac, Snoop Dog, Ice Cube, DMX style rappers anymore. Don’t get me wrong, I like Jazz and I like rap but I don’t get mustard with my peanut butter either. Somethings just should not be put together and of course it would be a peculiar kid from Chicago. I ain’t mad, but this is going to take some adjustments to get use to.

Go head Chance show the world that the influences of the Chicago ghetto can produce all kinds of “different”.

R-Kelly: Old news new story

Chiglo

R-Kelly: Old news new story

Just as R-Kelly makes his rounds to talk about his new music the blogs get buzzing again with old news about his sexual exploits. As if to say “we” are still hurting and “we” have not forgotten. I’m lost by all of this mass victimization. How is it that African American women go from knocking each other down, stabbing each other in that back, and dragging each others names through mud to empathy ? I’ll tell you how, it’s all bull crap. This isn’t about African American women feeling that this is an injustice. This is about African American doing what they love to do, male bash.

I’m so sick of it! It’s weak, it’s immature and most importantly it’s counter productive. African American women need to woman up and accept responsibility for their own actions. If you want to be empowered this is the only way you are ever going to become empowered. You don’t become empowered by playing the victim.

Chiglo_R-Kelly

Chiglo_R-Kelly

What R-Kelly did is illegal and depending on who you speak to it is also immoral. Is R-Kelly special ? No. Pull out your history books. This world was developed by men who slept with underaged girls because during those times it was legal. He participated in some activities that everyone “claims” they’ve never done. The reality is that in the fetish world anything and everything goes. Entirely too many of us are in the dark about what men enjoy sexually. I totally understand why so many end up in marriages built on lies. I am in no way defending or justifying his acts. I’m calling attention to the bigger topic that needs to be addressed like mature, intelligent women who want to save our families and rebuild our communities. F.Y.I when the family is broken then the community is broken. Instead of bashing R-Kelly for his “Fetish” I strongly suggest you find out what deep dark fetish your man is hiding.

Let’s not forget the fact that most of those native girls had never even heard of R-Kelly before. Every teenage girl in Chicago knew exactly who R-Kelly was and we heard all the rumors. We knew he was picking up girls at his former highschool and so did the entire south side of Chicago. The bigger question is why didn’t someone at the school or the police stop him if it were such a problem ? The reality is that it didn’t become a problem until those “girls” realized that R-Kelly had other “girls” and that they were not going to be his main chick. I don’t consider that being taken advantage of at all. Being taken advantage of requires some ignorance about the situation or person you are dealing with. These girls “knew” exactly who they were dealing with.

I recall the one girl driving around in her brand new PT Cruiser that R-Kelly bought her and sure didn’t seem taken advantage of to me. She was ready and willing. She didn’t appear to be suffering while joy riding through the neighborhood showing off her new car to all her friends.

This is not about injustice from the legal system. This is about African American women playing the victim. Each of those girls has mothers, they were not poor little orphans. They were raised by African American women who are responsible for teaching them, guiding them, shaping their character and morals. So, Why aren’t you bashing the mothers ? When your daughter is out all night, getting expensive gifts, getting new friends, suddenly becoming popular and cool don’t you notice ? When you sit down with your daughter and ask her how was school and whats going on in her life wouldn’t she tell you ? It’s time to accept responsibility for our poor parenting and disconnection from our children, our families and our community. This is the same cause of all the violence with our young African American men who were raised by single African American women. Still, you blame the absentee father for that. Exactly how is a man with little to no influence responsible for everything wrong with a child ?

I’m sick of it ! R-Kelly did not make those “girls” do anything they did not want to do. I saw him and his entourage with some girls a few times. They hung out at my job they Rock and Roll Mc Donalds across the street from the Rainforest cafe on the weekends. It was all fun, laughs and giggles. Not only that but I’m sure those girls had the chance to say no just like I did. Pick up your lip ! I was 19 it was 1999 and I told a member of his entourage NO and that was the end of that.

Hood : Food 4 Less will replace Dominicks

Chiglo

Hood : Food 4 Less will replace Dominicks

Chicago Dominicks The anticipated Dominicks going out of business sales are here and the inventory is flying off the shelves. Its like nothing you’ve ever seen before. Endless lines of people waiting to check out and huge sections of missing products. Everybody is buzzing about what they were able to get and what they missed out on.

I know it was darn near a fight for the salmon, but I managed to be right there as a box was being opened. As I walked down the snack aisle I wondered if they ever had potato chips at all. I specifically went for frozen fish and alkaline water, and when I entered the store I went straight to the health food section. I knew I could expect to find certain things virtually untouched, and I was correct. The vegan section was paradise although I was surprised to see the yogurt and my favorite protein drink gone.

Anyway, the sale is still going on but If you haven’t gone you better get there soon. I highly suggest you get up early about 7 am and make it an all day outing. Try to go to multiple stores because each neighborhood shops differently. One store might be fully packed with vegan food and pet food while other stores in the suburban areas will be completely out of those products. I was surprised to see so much pet food still on the shelves. IMG_2193

I was not surprised to see the pizza gone; all except my brand Kashi. I’m not complaining that’s more Kashi for me. The aisle for peanut butter, almond butter, and hazelnut spread was also virtually untouched. Honestly, I found that a bit disturbing. Peanut butter is something the kids can grab and eat whenever they are hungry and it should be readily available where ever there are children. Peanut is a staple food that provides the much needed protein as a healthy fulfilling snack.

Dominick’s maybe closing but there is an upside to this. From the looks of those lines it’s going to be a very Merry Christmas for a lot of families all thanks to Dominick’s going out of business. The picture below is a small section for Gluten free products including some yummy cookies that resemble Oreo’s. It’s a shame some people just don’t know how to recognize good for you food.

IMG_2186

Eating Right Gluten Free Products

While I was standing in line I talked to a few people who said that they never shopped at Dominicks because the prices were too high. I, myself, usually only bought produce from Dominicks because they have the best produce in my neighborhood. Which leads me to the conclusion that it’s only sensible for a chain with lower prices to take over the store. The store is much too big for AlDI’s so they are not to be considered and Mariano’s isn’t going to come to the crime ridden South Shore neighborhood. They can’t handle it.

So, who’s coming ? Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, Food 4 Less or Ultra.

Oddly, the fresh produce, fresh meat and bread were not 50% off on Friday the 13th. I was told that they will continue to reduce the prices over the coming days. Next Friday is supposed to be the start of the 75% off sale. With the way people arrived at the store Friday I don’t see how they will have enough product to stay open until next Friday.

IMG_2198

At one point the store was so crowded they stopped letting people in and did not open the doors and allow more customers in until 4:00pm.That was about an hour wait for some folks. Some people were all gathered together waiting to enter the store through the revolving doors while others waited in their cars. Still some people decided to leave and come back later rather than stand and wait in the cold. It was entirely too cold to stand outside a store waiting. I was pretty surprised that they decided to stop letting people in.

While I was making my way through the store nobody seemed to know who was going to take over the store. I did not give up finding out though and according to my source the store at 71st and Jeffery may be taken over by food 4 less. That’s according to my source I however, have my own opinion based on a review of the locations for food 4 less and it’s competitor Ultra Foods.

Locations for Food 4 Less

Screen Shot 2013-12-14 at 4.24.29 PM

Locations for Ultra Foods

Trader Joes ?

I seriously doubt that you can expect to see Trader Joes or Whole foods take over this huge space. Although, it would be nice to have a Trader Joes on the south side; I don’t think South Shore is the community for it. Now, Hyde Park would welcome Trader Joes with loving and open arms. While these two stores are quality stores in this community bargain stores do best.

So, a Kroger owned store such as food 4 less would do pretty well. I was told that Ultra prices beat out Food 4 Less and gives the most value for your buck. I’ve only shopped at both of these stores once so I can’t really say. I do know that Kroger has great deals and is an ideal store for those who clip coupons. Youtube is full of videos showing how these coupon queens clip coupons not only to save a few bucks but also to earn a living. Illinois residents could certainly benefit from more Kroger owned stores that allow you to get in on the coupon action.

Right now, it seems to be a toss up between Food 4 for Less and Ultra. We will see if my source is correct or if my prediction is correct. The worst thing that could happen is that the location remains empty for months. Not long ago the Ace Hardware store next door to Dominick’s closed and the Foot Locker too. The neighborhood is going through a change with an abundance of cheap dollar stores popping up seemingly over night. That Isn’t representative of a thriving middle class community with mansions, condos and beach front properties. South Shore is changing, and one can only hope for the best even though this does not look good.

While I was making my rounds through the store I saw shopping carts with stacks of frozen chitterlings. The Smart One’s and Healthy Choice sat in the freezer waiting. I honestly doubt though that these highly preserved, pre-packaged foods are any healthier than chitterlings. The freezer directly across from the Healthy Choice, Lean Cuisine and Smart Ones where the ice cream was kept the Haagen Diaz took a really big hit. It was nearly cleared out. The other ice cream brands, apparently less favorable than Haagen Diaz was practically fully stocked. Ben and Jerrys however cleared out faster than Haagen Diaz.

Just a survey of the store after the first big sale says a lot about the way people in this community shop, eat and live. For me, seeing this was also a cultural learning experience. I did manage to end up in line between two weight watchers participants, one who had lost 81 pounds and the other who was also a 15 year vegan. She was snacking on dehydrated fruit and granola which was also practically untouched over next to the alkaline water.

IMG_2182

Smart Ones and Healthy Choice

A google search landed me on this blog where the blogger who is a resident of the South Shore community gives another perspective on the closing of Dominick’s in the South Shore community.
